Ephemera — Little People
Look at him. So small, so helpless.
With little toes just like mine and
Fingernails like mine and
I am sorry about the hair but
It looks better pulled back and
The softest skin all over and
His smile for his mother
He has everything and he’ll grow into it and
He’s a little person already.
Of course I see him. So small he should be useless.
Webbed feet and ungainly frame,
The mockery of humanity in his hands.
Feathered and beaked, as if
Going boldly could make me ignore
The thin skin and unwonted self-belief,
A face that cannot show respect where due.
All it has, it takes from humans,
while it pretends to be a person.
