We decide to try destroying it1The amulet that does terribly things if it stops moving with fire. While Finarvi builds a furnace on the bank, Rajar keeps up a gentle jog with the amulet carried in his helmet.
Serala and Finarvi begin to pump the bellows on the kiln. The fire gets nice and hot… and then the kiln explodes. Oriana, Finarvi and Destin the duck get hit by flying heated mud. Dormal heals the duck and keeps them from dying. Rajar notices the mushroom cloud and comes back, heals Finarvi’s and Oriana’s legs, and Serala’s abdomen, tapping out his magic matrix crystal. We now have nice, livid scars, like lightning strikes.
Once recovered, we bury the amulet in the hot coals, and Oriana casts Conflagration on it, after meditating in the hope it does not go horribly wrong too. She sets up strange circles, sits down, crosses her legs, meditates, and then the crater of coals goes WOOF! Incredibly brightly. And then the fire goes out. The coals turn green and marshy-looking. The amulet is not even warm.
Destin is attempting to tiptoe away from us all. Serala notices him and clears her throat at him. He ceases his attempt to sneak off.
We all return to the raft. Rajar tries to persuade the river ducks to continue throughout the night, but when they realise it’s because of the gribbly chaos amulet, they demand 2 lunars extra per head in danger money.
We catch some sleep, keeping a watch going. Dormal and Finarvi take first watch, then Serala and Oriana, then Rajar. The first two watches pass peacefully, and Rajar doesn’t notice anything. He dons his armour.
As dawn breaks, we can see some centaurs cantering along Beast Valley. Keeping pace with us. About half a dozen. At least one of them is one we met last night. Oriana wonders if that fold of hill inland would conceal a larger force. Then notices a dust cloud that appears to bear that out. She makes us aware.
On the other bank, Esrolia comes into view and we make slow progress to Nochet.
Caladraland? The part of the Holy Country where the volcanoes are? Plenty of them too. We could take a ship along the coast past Rhigos.
Rajar still gets off the raft, casts Bladesharp3 and tries to smash the amulet with his axe. The shaft of the axe shatters.
We arrive at the Nochet docks. The ducks tie up and make sure we get the heck off their raft, and we head to the great library. Rajar tells the duck we are going to pay him to tell his story to the scribes, and then he can go.
Rajar paces for half an hour while we wait for a LM priest to arrive and answer the request of a Lightbringer for aid against chaos. She gives the ritual response in ancient Esrolian and rhyming couplets. Dormal quickly explains the problem with the amulet – how to destroy it, and how much movement it needs to stop it turning the library into a chaos swamp. She falls into step with Rajar and studies the amulet. 1km an hour at least needed to keep it dormant, sufficiently strong magic, great purifying fire, (volcano optimum) failing that throwing it at Yelm. If we placed it in a place that destroys all magic, that should do it.
Rajar knows a place that eats magic. The Dead Place. Rajar informs the Stormbulls at the temple what the amulet is and that if he doesn’t succeed and a chaos swamp appears, he will know what happens. The storm khan gives Rajar a banner for the captain of the ship he’ll take to fly. Hopefully it will fend off wolf pirates 🙂
Meanwhile, Dormal is shopping for a cart wheel to affix the amulet to, to keep it moving. He heads to the Palazzo and asks for Serzeen. He explains what we’ve found and that we need to get to Caladraland to destroy it. Serzeen procures him a cartwheel (by virtue of an axe) and will arrange a ship. Dormal goes to talk to Grandmother then. He has to wait a couple of hours for her to finish a ritual. And he tells her who Oriana is, and that she was once Esrolian. He tells Serzeen she is an asset – a non LM sorcerer, but does not mention the Lunar sorcery bit.
He is given Eranda, the perky Humakti, to be her bodyguard, he describes Oriana to Eranda. And assigned some servants to keep the cartwheel moving. Then he’s sent off to get a quick bath, some food and rest. The rest of the group are also given Saiciae hospitality. Oriana knows Serzeen, Runelord of Babeester Gor, by reputation, and decides not to offend, and accepts Eranda as a bodyguard.
We rest, and later head down to the ship. We make a strange procession and strangely, we are untroubled by muggers.
The silk bundle Rajar has is a silk flag with Stormbull’s runes in yellow on red. Dormal recognises this flag means: ‘dangerous lunatics on holy mission’ aka ‘explosives on board’ or ‘Very Undiplomatic Immunity’
Next time: ‘Our Flag Means Death’
