Xenofos was in Sartar, while the others were waiting outside the borders.
The scholar was performing service in the Temple of Uleria when Irillo came by. Irillo received a bit of routine maintenance and met up with Xenofos. He mentioned that he was there to serve as Varanis’ herald to Argrath. The Issarian asked Xenofos to attend the audience and be prepared to flee with the news if necessary.
Irillo presented himself before Argrath and his court. There was no High Priest of Orlanth present. The former head of the Storm Bulls was also notably absent. Venna stood behind the throne taking notes. Eril was present.1Xenofos fumbled Intrigue and worked out that although Kalis was still married to Ebron, she was making eyes at Argrath. Court proceeded much as expected. Irillo noticed the difference in seating positions, which indicated that Eril’s influence had diminished.
When it was finally Irillo’s turn, he launched into a persuasive declamation about the “Dagger of Humakt” and his patron, the thane Varaena. He did a remarkably good job. Xenofos realized that the court had been rather boring up until that point, but now everyone was on edge. Irillo was causing discord as well as harmony.
Venna handed the clay tablet to Kalis so she could read the vellum from Varanis. Kalis then passed the clay tablet on to Lhankor Mhy. Venna read the message and informed Argrath of its contents.2See Expectation of exile.
Argrath asked Irillo to recite the message for the court, which he did.3because he’s a spy Argrath granted Varaena permission to speak with the Telmori as she wished but reserved his own judgment. Berra was thanked and given permission to return to Sartar. There were some brief political check-ins with Eril which included some snideness from Argrath that only Irillo noticed. After that, Irillo was dismissed.
Xenofos and Irillo had a bit of a debrief. Xenofos made the decision to head to Blue Tree, and Irillo went to take the message back to Varanis and her friends.4See Oracles and Messengers for the reunion.
Berra did some open sobbing for joy on being allowed back into Sartar, and had to resort to gesticulation because she could not think of the words.
Varanis proposed they stop in Blue Tree until Wildday and then head to Wolfsland. Everyone made it to Blue Tree safely, where Yehna wasn’t but the rest of the clan was. Berra stayed in her sister’s house, inviting her friends in if they wanted the room and privacy. The place had been carefully cleaned despite Yehna’s disappearance.
After a bit of catching up in Blue Tree, the party set out once more. Irillo headed for Jonstown while the others traveled toward Wolfsland.
They followed narrow, difficult paths and frequently had to dismount and proceed on foot. Varanis and Maalira heard strange noises, causing Varanis to halt and call out that she had come to speak with the leader of the Telmori. She then asked whether anyone else could hear the harp.
Berra cast Soul Sight. There was a tremendous amount of magic surrounding them, along with four people with spirits. Varanis detected no nearby enemies. The music intensified. Berra attempted to approach one of the Telmori, but it faded away.
After a brief discussion, the party decided to leave the path. The journey became rougher still.
They ended up being drawn into a Heroquest involving ducks and Lunars.5Duck Hunt Varanis tried very hard to resist it. She managed to pull Xenofos free, but Maalira and Berra became trapped.
Berra attempted to kill Varanis. Varanis got hold of one of Berra’s swords, Raven, while Xenofos restrained Berra. Raven was too occupied with Jar-Eel to help bring Berra back to her senses. In the end, Berra was bonked on the head with her own sword.
Jar-Eel made a dazzling appearance and marked Berra with the sign of Harmony. The wolves and ducks panicked, but eventually everyone snapped out of it.
An elder of the Telmori arrived to parley, and afterward the party was led to the place where the tribal king was staying.
