The Unexpected Storm

After Session 8 of Season 6 Prax arc

Dawn at Orlanthi Temple has a lot of Pavis storm worshippers dancing and shouting. It’s smaller than the Vingan Temple in Nochet, far smaller than the storm temple in Boldhome, but it’s vibrant and exuberant. There is a wind from the West, bringing a touch of rain, which is unusual given the direction, but it does not seem like a storm will ruin the day.

The morning is mostly spent being polite to those who are in residence. The man who seems to be running the show here is Gorovan, but he only seems to be. Everything points to him holding the fort – or the city – on behalf of Argrath. There are Wind Lords back from the season’s campaigning who are deferring to him, and it is not just his personal power or position that makes that happen.

Around noon, the air suddenly goes still, as a ceremony to welcome Yelm back to the sky begins. High above, clouds are gathering.

None of the people Varanis has just been talking to gave any indication that this would happen, and while it does not feel unnatural, it is also unexpected.

Varanis keeps watch on the sky even as she steps through her parts of the ritual.

Yelm does not so much take his place as get occluded. The clouds build up, although no lightning is seen. Gorovan walks quickly through the ritual, and then a lot of people stand watching the storm to come. It seems to be mostly above the Temple, which is obviously worrying people.

1varanis: ((I decided to roll on Movement to see if I was bothered or just rolling with it and enjoying on the oncoming storm. I got another special. I think Varanis is just dancing and enjoying the feeling of the incoming weather. Does that make sense with what’s happening? Or should her senses be warning her of trouble? bleysrex: Her senses are saying something is big but not necessarily bad. ))

An hour or so after noon, the storm breaks. Even in Nochet, a sea storm does not bring this much rain. Prax is very very wet.

Gorovan and the others are not worried, per se, but they seem puzzled.

Varanis dances in the rain. At least for now, with the prospect of a warm, dry bed later, this feels glorious.

That is most of the day. Some of the others are subdued, and not dancing. More are just watching the rain in awe.

It feels like a good dance, but it also feels like the rain is not responding to her. It has its own agenda, and there is relief in its beat, and sorrow.

Eventually, Varanis begins to tire and lets herself slow to a stop. She offers a final prayer to Vinga, before joining the watching Orlanthi.

She’s soaked through to the skin. Her padding will take a while to dry out after this.

By evening, the rains have moved on.

2bleysrex: OK, that’s the only bit where there was a timing issue. varanis: Now I’m super curious about that storm.bleysrex: The weather’s broken in Prax for the season, anyhow.

Once the storm passes and she’s said her farewells to any new acquaintances, Varanis makes her way back to Geo’s. She drips on the floor. She’s got a small-ish private room and it’s empty but for her this evening. She strips down, hangs the wet padding from a couple of convenient hooks, and wipes down all of the bronze armour with a dry linen rag.

She picks blue wool for her evening wear and makes her way downstairs to find a fire, hot food, and her friends.
