Events
The group having met up1…because these are the Hero Wars, and coincidences abound, they found their way to the Yalmoring clan and village. The chief there, Andrin, was very welcoming. The Earth Witch went to sleep in the pig pen. While Maalira was offered a bed as a White Lady and King’s Emissary, she refused it, and the group camped outside.
There was an evening meal which was a good one, and the group listened to stories of the Horse and the Yalmoring, but did not do a huge amount. There was talk of doing the autumn ploughing with horses and not oxen, although that was a change. The horse had been helping them, so they built a huge shrine. It had not been their plan to anger the Yelmalians, but that was seen as a bonus. The horse’s spirit priest was Andrin, with his acolyte one of the house servants, Leina. When questioned, Leina said that the spirit spoke Heortling, but everyone present did as well.
Rajar found an old Storm Bull, and talked to him for a while. He said there was not a Chaos problem nearby – the horse was not suspect in that fashion.
The group discussed the problem amongst themselves later, outside, coming to the conclusion that Andrin was so dim he would not offend a Mistress Troll, and that he had not caused the problem of his own accord, but might have helped make it worse.
In the morning they noticed that the pigs were now asleep in a perfect square shape, with the Earthwitch in the centre, looking serene in an open sort of sarcophagus. As she breathed in and out, the pigsty’s surface was going up and down slightly. Berra woke her, and she went from horizontal to vertical in a straight line. Rajar dunked his head.
The group, plus the Earthwitch, went up to see the horse spirit. Andrin came with them, to help. On the way, Dormal looked towards Sun County to see if there was a Yelmalio sigil in return, but there was not.
Andrin talked about how people had mostly been in favour of the carving of the horse, although the loremaster had pointed out it might annoy the sundomers. He was dismissed as an old worrier. Rajar looked on in admiration of Andrin’s reality refusal field.
As they got closer to the top of the hill, some of the party2Those who passed a POWx3 noticed it getting warmer. Those who did not just started sweating a bit. Meanwhile, the entire party just speeded up, even those walking3Such as Rajar, who was not going to bring a bison to a horse-place. The same people kept hearing hoofbeats at the gallop around them.
Serala suddenly found herself seeing as if through a hawk’s eyes, riding the sky, or even on an invisible horse, up high. Pag was down below, where her body was, and there was another horse galloping towards her. Rajar walked into an invisible wall, and stopped moving. Maalira passed through the strange wall.4Those who passed POW were stopped. Maalira didn’t register to the horse, having failed it.
The horse talked to Serala, calling her a descendant of its master, ‘The King’. That was, it seemed, Ironhoof. It asked about worship, and said that it would make beasts faster and worthier, and bring great fertility to herds. It did not think it had upset anyone. Asked if it was staying it said that it had always been there, and had been woken. A little later, Serala woke up in her body, and revealed what had happened. The Earthwitch started swearing. At her feet, a Disorder Rune cracked the ground. People hid behind each other, and Berra stepped forward to ask her not to do any earthquaking. She listened for long enough to demand that one of her husband-protectors kiss her. Serala stepped in, and after a few moments the Earthwitch took a deep breath and flowers started to sprout at her feet. It was possible that she was pregnant, but she was definitely a Fertility person again.
She talked about how the horse could help, and the drawbacks of helping it – it would need to be worshipped in this place. The King of the Centaurs had raised the spirit, and might possible have a call to do so without saying there was trespass, as once no human foot had walked the lands. The Earthwitch was puzzled over how dramatic the carving was, however, as normally a standing stone would suffice.
The Earthwitch idly moved her foot by the Disorder Rune’s remains, and the turf leapt out of its way. She drew an Infinity Rune, which some people recognised. Dormal commented on it, and Berra looked up at the Earthwitch, seeing the Infinity Rune on her forehead, plainly, which she had not noticed before. While the others started off back, she asked about the Rune, and took in the answer.
On their return to Yalmoring, Andrin’s wife Vanasa greeted, and in order curtseyed to, the Earthwitch5Of whom she was probably very nervous, Maalira, Berra, and Serala. She invited them for refreshments and took the women in to weave. Berra counted up who had gone in, and told Dormal to go where he shouldn’t. Dormal did so, with an illusion of a form that Maalira recognised as the wettest lettuce from the Hospital in Nochet, Hanky Lady.
Vanasa talked about how the horse carving had been brought up, and who supported it. She thought it had been Leina, but was not sure, and perhaps there was another voice, and her husband had been vehement about the size of the carving. Dormal6With a special on Insight to let him know she was unsure about something felt this was somehow familiar, like the missing part was a Eurmali Rune magic, the Lie. On Dormal’s prompting, Maalira asked which voice, and Vanasa was sure that Leina had said it, but someone else perhaps had as well… Maybe one of the elder men? Vanasa was making the best of it, and even mentioned she would be open to taking an Elmali or Yelmalian husband.
Oriana’s thinking was that a strong wind would lead the chief, but Dormal was puzzled because Andrin was so swayable in general, and yet on this he was so unmoving.
A hand reached out from behind a neighbouring loom and tapped on Oriana’s shuttle at the loom. Two things happened: the weaving got a hell of a lot better, and there was a lot more of it. About half of what Oriana had ‘woven’ was deep green – about 5m. The other was about 5m of pure white. The hand retreated back behind its own loom. Earthwitch had happened.
After Vanasa had goggled at the weaving, the women went out and Dormal told the group that there was likely to be a Eurmali involved. The group took in this information, and then rode towards Sun Dome County, armed with it.

“I love you!” – Rajar
“Make sure Maalira’s tucked up nicely.” – Berra
“You need to be INT 15 to be chief, if you’re following the rules. GM has better rules.” – Berra
bleysrex: Special on Insight.
“And as people said, what’s the worst that could happen?” – Andrin
“Well, they could call down a giant sun-spear on your tribal chief like last time.” – Berra
bleysrex: “Oh, they wouldn’t do that.”
“They did!”
“Oh, they’ve grown past that!”
Rajar is looking at Andrin in admiration.
“Recommendation to Lord Tennebris: get them to carve a bigger horse and let Nature take its course.” – Dormal
“Does Lord Raven get a POW roll?” – Berra
“No, he absolutely does not.” – GM
“Rajar is walking because he’s not dumb enough to ride a Praxian beast up this hill.” – Rajar
“Cool! Possibly slightly worrying, but…” – Serala
“I’m going to make the sweeping assumption that this is a powerful spirit I should not annoy…” – Serala
“Praxians, can you make a POWx5 roll please?” – GM
“Ey-up. Diplomatic incident incoming.” – Dormal
The horse whinnies and then speaks in Pure Horse Tongue. “Ah, granddaughter of my master!”
“You have a master?” – Serala
“Well, he who woke me…” – Horse
“A certain centaur?” – Serala
“Yes. The King.” – Horse
“… ah.” – Serala
“Have you come to worship me?” – Horse
“It was certainly in my mind.” – Serala
“I can make your beasts faster and worthier and bring great fertility to your herds.” – Horse
“Ooh, it’s clearly the devil. It knows how to tempt.” – Serala
The horse gets along with whoever it needs to. “Nothing I have done has upset anyone, I think.” – Horse
“So you’re staying?” – Serala
“I have always been here. I have just woken up.” – Horse
“The King. Does he worship you?” – Serala
“No, the King does not follow Elmal. We have things in common.” – Horse
“… That does make sense.” – Serala
“The King. The King of the centaurs woke up the horse.” – Serala
“This is the point where the Earthwitch starts swearing.” – GM
“I back up a bit.” – Dormal
“I go behind Dormal.” – Maalira
“I step between Maalira and the Earth Witch, which puts Dormal behind me too.” – Berra
“Uh, lady, no earthquakes please, until we’re sure we’re sure we want an Earthquake.” – Berra
“May be the bravest thing I do today.” – Berra
“May be the bravest thing you ever do.” – Dormal
“Bravest. Last…” – Rajar
bleysrex: Berra passes Charm. Earthwitch only passes her passive intimidate.
“This is an imposition on this land, by another shaman.” – Earthwitch
“The King of the centaurs is a shaman?” – Serala
“Almost certainly. And he may view it as not an imposition, because once no human foot walked these lands.” – Earthwitch
“I will not be able to accompany you to Beast Valley if you wish to discuss this. Do you have any further questions for the spirit?” – Earthwitch
“It’s keen to know who’s going to worship it.” – Serala
“Sacrifice, blood treasure, power. It can aid your herds, it promises speed, it promises fertility, it is an old and powerful spirit of the Horse, and through him the faithful thane.” – Earthwitch.
“And the downsides?” – Serala
“Well, you will need to worship at least once a year here. It will not be able to be worshipped from afar. It’s a thing of a place.” – Earthwitch
“I am puzzled why they’ve gone so dramatic. Most spirits are happy with a standing stone.” – Earthwitch
“I think it has a certain sense of its own worth.” – Serala
“My guess: Leina is a Grazelander or something else who decided to go big.” – Berra, but very OOC
“You’re asking if a horse can speak pure horse tongue.” – Earthwitch
bleysrex: The Earthwitch is scraping away some of the turf with her foot, which is lifting as she pushes her foot at it – a new Rune is forming.
annaveejay: Pass
bleysrex: INTx5: Infinity Rune.
bleysrex: (Dormal specials.)
bleysrex: “That’s funny. I’ve only ever seen that on some of my mother’s scrolls.” – Dormal
“I’ve seen that before too!” – Berra, horrified and amazed
bleysrex: “I look at her, back at the ground, back at her. Does she have the Infinity Rune on her tattoos?” – Berra
“Yes, now that you mention it. In the middle of her forehead. You can’t think why you didn’t notice it before.” – GM
“Berra does not look nervous exactly, but she does look intrigued.” – Berra
“How did you get that?” – Berra
“When I realised a secret about Ernalda.” – Earthwitch
Considers, bows, sets off – Berra
“It shouldn’t have taken you any great time. The distances aren’t great. But it seems to have taken you a bit longer than you thought.” – GM
“Did it slow us down when we walked away?” – Berra
“No, you don’t think so. You may have walked further than geography permitted.” – GM
bleysrex: “I think we could all use some refreshments.” – Vanasa
“And beer!” – Rajar perks up
“Maalira pinches the bridge of her nose.” – Maalira
“You two are taken aside to the weaving room and food is brought in. Beer and other refreshments are brought for the male side…” – GM
“Crap… Dormal?” – Berra
“Yep?” – Dormal
“Eurmali get to places they’re not supposed to be, right?” – Berra
“Yep?” – Dormal
“Get in there and make sure she asks the right questions.” – Berra
thinks and rubs hands – Dormal
“There’s a really wet lettuce from [the Great Hospital] following you.” – GM
“I’m going to look over my shoulder, roll my eyes, and go on.” – Maalira
“Hankie?” – Dormalla
“Oh, I’m just here to attend on the lady. The High Priestess was very firm on the matter.” – Dormalla
“So, you’re both given a loom to get on with.” – GM
“How may I assist you, sisters?” – Vanasa
“We wanted to know where did the decision come from to make the big horse on the hill?” – Maalira
considers
“It came up during one of the meetings that the whole clan had. I’m trying to remember who first suggested it… I think it was Leina. But others brought it up after she’d spoken of it. Including my husband, but also others, and in general everybody thought it was a good idea. I certainly felt it was a statement. I did worry about the Sun Dome, but I couldn’t talk my husband round, and generally the clan felt that bigger was better.” – Vanasa
“Just like men.” – Oriana
“Do we think she’s telling the truth?” – Dormal
“Well, roll it.” – GM
cult lore roll – Dormal
“Yeees…” – Dormal
“Does this feel like the little ripples in the world of a Lie spell, with a capital L?” – Dormal
“That would explain things, yes.” – GM
“And that would explain why there was a voice just speaking it…” – Dormal
“Yes, that too… And you think she’s puzzled about why she couldn’t talk her husband round.” – GM
“Well, Elmal has always been strong here. We are an Elmali clan, and I know it’s Orlanth that’s the great husband, but here it’s often Elmal as well, and that works for us. A lot of the older Elmali are set in their ways. They’re very firm that there is no other way to worship Elmal, and any way that’s done in a place down South might not be right.” – Vanasa
“I’m very happy of course with an Elmali husband, but I would of course consider a Yelmali one if things were different. Oh, or an Orlanthi one of course. But it’s possible that one of them thought it would be both deference to the spirit and a gesture of our feelings to our neighbours down South.” – Vanasa
“Well, there’s certainly been a receipt of that gesture.”
“I really didn’t think it was a good idea, and I said so at the time, but in the end the chief is the chief, and the clan can lead the chief.” – Vanasa
“If there’s anything I can do, White Lady, to help smooth things over with the neighbours, please let me know. We can’t always lead our husbands, but sometimes we can mend fences afterwards.” – Vanasa
“We’ll certainly come to you when we have some kind of a plan.” – Maalira
“Thank you. As we know there is always another way.” – Vanasa
bleysrex: After a little while, a hand reaches out from behind a neighbouring loom and taps on Oriana’s shuttle at the loom. Two things happen: the weaving gets a hell of a lot better, and there’s a lot more of it. About half of what Oriana has woven is deep green – about 5m. The other is about 5m of pure white. The hand retreats back behind its own loom. Earthwitch helped!
“Thank you for your time, White Lady. Your weaving is very elegant.” And then Vanasa looks at Oriana’s.
guilt – Oriana
“Ah, one of the other ladies gave me some tips.” – Oriana
“Next, a King turns up hearing Oriana can weave flax into gold.” – Berra
“Never stare a gift loom in the… warp?” – Dormal
“Maalira’s going to have to really really look dignified.” – Berra
alarm – Maalira
“Sorry.” – Berra
clicks fingers “You! Where is a good place to stay? This lady will be hoping for an invitation from the Count.” – Berra
“Do they have a sauna or sweat lodge here?” – Dormal
“Yes.” – GM
“Oh thank god.” – Dormal
“They also have a plunge pool.” – GM
“Not for long!” – Rajar
