Deep in the prison of Earthquakes was Berra
Seeking her friend who was captured by Lunars
Came on Varanis and knew battle-joy then1Either at the thought of fighting her way out, or, as Alleyn has it, because the truth emerged here. The sage Llewun is of the opinion that Berra’s frustrated sexuality came to a head, and translates it as ‘joy-lust’.

So Berra learned the great lesson of Humakt
Even great Orlanth will waver in honour2The Sage Llewun states that here is the hand of Eril, an addition to the saga.3
Turning his face to ambition of kingship
Leaving behind those who think that he loves them
Every Humakti must stand in the breaches
Lone as a sentinel high on the cliffside
Warmed by the glow brought by honour and duty
Going to battle for need and not glory
What Really Happened
After the reveal that Jar-eel would be running the Heroquest, the group went into the tunnels of the Earth Temple, with Varanis trying to find ways of getting out. Berra, who was certain they would not get away, also tried to find ways out, because she was determined not to do anything that Jar-eel wanted, and was still very angry.
When Varanis revealed that she had volunteered for the Heroquest, Berra could no longer stay with them, and walked off to be alone. However, unknown to the group, she was holding onto the anger so that she could play Humakt instead of being forced into the path of Yanafal Tarnils.
As she walked she was someone who seemed to be a brown-skinned man, then a bandit. She was very much Humakt, but somehow the bandit’s voice pulled her into a different state, and she recognised him as Devolin.
She reached out as Humakt and put a hand around his neck. He called ransom, and she managed to remember that she was Berra and told him that they were stuck in a Heroquest and he had to be himself, as hard as he could. They set off together, and Berra found that they were in a busy city, which she could name as being in Carmania. Devolin asked her who Danfive was, which was what he had been thinking his name was, but Berra was unsure.
Devolin picked a guard’s pocket to pay his ransom, and Berra remembered Yanafil Tarnils was a Carmanian nobleman and warrior with a lot of resources. Devolin knew they were in Carmania without even trying – and managed to pronounce it. All of the coins were in identical pairs, which confused Berra.
