Events
Sliding into a space on the bench near to Irillo, Varanis greets him. “Hi! How was your journey?”
The house here has relatively thick walls, allowing more privacy than internal wattling usually does.
“Mine was… eventful towards the end. Manasa threw me and I ended up chasing both horses. A kind man caught them for me. It turns out he’s Thane here and will be attending the feast.” She drops her voice very, very low. “And I think he’s Eril’s brother.“ Laughingly, she adds in her regular tone, “It was rather embarrassing.”
“I can imagine. Ours was uneventful… aside from me ending up buying a whole load of trollkin thralls and freeing them. They’re in the stables.”
“Trollkin? Whatever for?” Lowering her voice again, she says “The armour is the same and he looks like him but for colouring. Even sounds like him. He wants to meet you and talk trade. Thought you should know, in case you go all silvery again.”
“That would be inconvenient. I’ve already met the son, who looks just like his father did twenty-five years ago. And the trollkin are because that’s what Salid asked Dormal for. And because he wanted Thralls for the next part. So, they’re it. And because I’m a sentimentalist.”
“The son?” Varanis asks with a raised eyebrow.
“Hengrast, son of Silor. Eril’s nephew” Hengrast, showing ungrateful timing, has already left after showing Varanis where the other guests were.
“The father smiles more readily,” Varanis observes for no apparent reason.
“I hope to avoid finding out until Eril is out of my mind.”
“Silor wants to talk to you. He is curious about what you have brought to trade,” Varanis says. “He said something about thralls? You said you bought trollkin but freed them. Are there others? It’s not your usual trade….”
“I haven’t,” he says.
Varanis nods. “He may misunderstand about all the trollkin. In any case, be aware that he might seek you out to talk trade.” She rises. “I’ll leave you to your accounts.”
“Thank you. It will help granny sort things out if something happens to me.”
She looks startled, then very somber. “We will protect you, Irillo.”
“Of course.”
